Carrier HR46TN005 Motor Master VFD – 5HP 3-Phase 400/480V
Overview
The Carrier HR46TN005 Motor Master VFD is a high-performance, OEM variable frequency drive designed for controlling three-phase motors in demanding HVAC, compressor, and fan applications. With a 5 HP rating and operating on a 400/480 VAC power supply, this drive offers variable speed control to enhance system efficiency, reduce energy use, and extend life of mechanical components. Weighing approximately 15 lbs and measuring 9 × 8 × 7 inches, it’s built for drop-in replacement in many Carrier and compatible systems. Apex Controls
Key Features & Benefits
-
Matches OEM Carrier specifications for drop-in replacement in Motor Master / MotorMaster V applications.
-
Variable speed control enables better efficiency, quieter operation, and reduced wear on motors by avoiding full-speed all the time.
-
3-phase power architecture for industrial / commercial loads; handles 400-480V input / output.
-
Compact, yet rugged, build with all required protections (overload, overvoltage, etc.) – ideal for replacing legacy units.
-
Weight and size suited for relatively easy handling / installation in motor control panels.

Applications
This VFD is ideally used for:
-
Fan / blower speed control in large HVAC systems (e.g., rooftop units, air handlers).
-
Compressor motor control applications where speed modulation helps reduce power peaks.
-
Systems requiring OEM-compliant motor control for Carrier or compatible equipment.
-
Situations where retrofit of older fixed-speed drives is needed to improve efficiency or reduce noise.
Installation & Best Practices
-
Verify correct voltage and phase before installation; mismatched supply can damage the drive.
-
Ensure proper cooling / ventilation around the unit – VFDs generate heat.
-
Use proper cable gauge and grounding; follow the manufacturer’s wiring diagram.
-
Protect from environmental contamination (dust, moisture) for reliable operation.
-
Check for firmware or parameter setup (if the drive has adjustable settings) to ensure correct speed, overload limits, etc.
